Chevalier's
dual column grinder, fixed beam type is designed for shops demanding speed,
rigidity, large grinding area and affordable pricing. Models are available with
table sizes up to 60- x 120-inch and load capacities up to 17,600-lbs, which
makes them suitable for grinding medium to large size parts for aircraft, wind
turbine, automotive, power generation, oil exploration, mining and heavy
machinery.
The X-axis table speed goes from 16-82 FPM. Continuous, heavy duty metal removal is made possible by a high precision, large diameter cartridge type spindle running with 4-PCS Class 7 (P4) angular contact ball bearings plus a set of needle roller bearings in front. Driving the spindle is a 2,000-RPM motor running a 20- x 5- x 3-inch wheel. The control system is based on Chevalier's own PC based Smart II CNC control which features a 3-step grinding and dressing mode, programmable concave and convex grinding functions, conversational graphic program for surface, crisscross, plunge and multi-slot grinding, interrupt option for automatic wheel dressing during the grinding cycle and a grinding simulation mode that can be done by turning the handwheel clockwise to execute and counterclockwise to reverse the program.
A "macro zone" allows the operator to create and save his own custom programs, which can then be transferred through the Ethernet or intranet. Total rated power ranges from 30- to 80-HP. To handle the huge coolant requirement for extended grinding cycles, the machine uses a 132-gallon coolant tank and filtration system. The saddle movement is driven by rotating ballscrew nut instead of ballscrew to minimize vibration and thermal displacement. The machine base features hardened and ground double "V" longitudinal slideways for optimum straightness and smooth table movement and four heavy duty boxways on downfeed. Offered as options are higher HP spindle motors, spindle oil cooler, 40- x 40-inch electromagnetic chuck, SBS automatic grinding wheel balancer and combination coolant and dust collector with magnetic separator device and table mount diamond disc dresser. The electrical cabinet and cable channels are mounted on each side of the machine to save space.
