Haimer USA Introduces Ultimate Series of Shrink-Fit Chucks

Haimer USA has introduced its new Ultimate Chucks, shrink-fit chucks that include the anti-vibration features of the Haimer Power Shrink chucks and the positive locking of the Haimer SafeLock chucks, suitable for all applications but designed for high-performance machining as well as heavy milling with a high chip volume.

Ultimate Chucks, like Power Shrink Chucks, are universally applicable high-power shrink-fit chucks with optimized geometry that reduce the transmission of vibration. This feature makes them suitable for high-speed processes where surface finishes are vital and for heavy milling.

In shrink-type holders, Haimer achieves vibration control in two ways. First, the company offers short, shrink-fit chucks that, solely due to their compact length of only 65 mm, minimize runout that causes vibration. These chucks are designed for heavy-duty or high-speed metal cutting. The second type is the extended Power Shrink Chuck, whose special exterior geometry controls vibration. The step angle or hollow-shank taper of these tool holders has a large diameter, which makes them rigid, yet they are precisely tapered toward the nose of the chuck to enable access to even hard-to-reach corners when milling or drilling, the company said. Haimer offers these chucks in 130 mm and 160 mm lengths and guarantees concentricity of 0.00012-inches (0.003 mm).

Ultimate Chucks are equipped with cool-jet bores, to ensure that the coolant reliably reaches the cutting edge around the tool.

"In situations where a machine offers relatively little space for tools, the long-length Ultimate Chucks are an ideal solution," said Brendt Holden, President of Haimer USA. "With this chuck, the same tool can be used for rough machining and finishing, with excellent results in both cases."

"In recent years, special cutting tools have been developed to withstand the high torques, feed rates and machining forces associated with high-performance cutting," said a Haimer USA spokesperson. "Yet, there is still a danger of tools being pulled out of chucks as a result of the high loads. Haimer USA is offering a solution for manufacturers that push their machines to the limit-SafeLock.

"The SafeLock System, which has been incorporated into the Ultimate Chucks, combines the advantages of a shrink-fit chuck with those of a positive connection by integrating ball or pin drivers into the chuck. Those drivers grip into helical grooves that are ground into the cutter shank in the opposite direction of the cutting forces. Because of the shape of the groove, the tool is simultaneously safeguarded against spinning as well as against pull out when confronted with radial and axial cutting forces."

"The clamping procedure is simple," said Holden. "The chuck is heated as usual and the tool is inserted with a rotating movement. The balls or pins find their way into the grooves due to the turning movement. After a few seconds, the holder cools down, such that both a frictional and positive connection is made."

The Haimer Ultimate Chucks combine the technology of the Power Shrink design with the SafeLock interface. The Ultimate Chuck also has a larger mass than standard shrink-fit chucks to allow for aggressive machining in many materials, the company said.
