New Additive Manufacturing Technology



TRUMPF will feature the TruLaser Cell 3000, TruLaser Weld 5000, TruPrint 3000 and TruMicro 2000.

TruLaser Cell 3000

The TruLaser Cell 3000 is a 5-axis laser machine for fine cutting, precision welding and additive manufacturing (AM). This versatile machine provides laser processing of 2-D or 3-D small or medium sized components.

The TruLaser Cell 3000 will be featured with the laser metal deposition (LMD) technology package as an addition to the AM systems portfolio TRUMPF offers. This AM process is used for cladding or adding volume and structures to existing parts. It uses a laser beam to generate a melt pool on the surface of the component (substrate) before a stream of metal powder is blown into that melt pool and fused to the substrate. Fabricators are able to apply highly precise layers, both in overlap and size, using this technology.

This technology is suitable for one-off prototypes to high-volume production. With solid-state laser options providing up to 8 kW of laser power, the machine is able to process many materials including nonferrous metals. Processing metals is simple since the focal position is adjusted to the thickness of the sheet metal by the operating software. It is also possible to expand the diameter of the focus. This enables fabricators to cut materials of different thicknesses or to switch between welding and cutting applications without changing the focusing optics. The TruLaser Cell 3000 requires only a minimum floor space since the electrical control, cooling units and laser optics are all integrated into the machine.

TruLaser Weld 5000

"Laser welding offers numerous advantages over conventional techniques: better weld quality, a robust bond and faster processing times," said a TRUMPF spokesperson. TRUMPF will be showcasing the TruLaser Weld 5000, a laser welding cell that greatly simplifies the laser welding process for experts and beginners alike. This is due to the FusionLine option, which makes tolerant laser welding possible. It is a laser welding process using welding wire supply that allows for the welding of components with gaps.

TruPrint 3000

The TruPrint 3000 is a medium-format AM machine geared towards the large-scale production of complex metal parts. Depending on the desired part and its application, it can be made from a variety of weldable materials including steel, nickel-based alloys, titanium or aluminum. The TruPrint 3000 utilizes laser metal fusion (LMF) technology and processes parts measuring up to 300 mm in diameter and 400 mm in height. The laser's beam diameter measures between 100-500 microns and the system has a preheat temperature of up to 200 °C. The machine is equipped with an exchangeable cylinder, which allows the construction chamber and supply cylinders to be easily switched out. This saves operators time since they can prepare a new set of supply cylinders and unpack the finished build outside of the machine. The system is equipped with two 75-liter supply cylinders, which contain enough powder to complete the entire manufacturing process without having to stop. The unpacking station is seamlessly integrated into the process chain. This allows for increased machine utilization since the unpacking procedure is now an offline process running parallel to production. Build jobs can take as little as 30 minutes.

TruMicro 2000

TRUMPF has continued technical development of its ultra-short pulsed lasers and has released a picosecond laser, the TruMicro 2000. The laser can be used in a variety of industry applications ranging from high-quality metal engraving to cutting extremely thin films, as well as for corrosion-free marking of medical instruments and chrome-plated plastics. With extremely short laser pulses ranging from 0.4 to 20 picoseconds and a peak power of 20 microjoules, the TruMicro 2000 is capable of cold processing: as soon as the material being processed by the laser pulse begins to register a thermal process, it is already over. The result is that any undesirable thermal effects, such as micro-fissures and residual melt that would otherwise arise during material processing, are nowhere to be found due to the very small heat-affected zone. "This makes extremely precise applications such as smooth surfaces and deep black markings possible on a variety of materials," said the spokesperson.
