Mitsui Seiki's MTF 2018 Technical Fair

More than 1,000 members of the manufacturing community attended the Mitsui Technical Fair 2018 (MTF 2018) presented recently by Mitsui Seiki at its head Kawashima manufacturing facility in Japan.

The fair included exhibits of updated and new machinery from Mitsui Seiki as well as peripheral products from 37 sponsor companies.

Among the machines shown at the fair was a preview of the new Vertex 100 5-axis vertical machining center (VMC) that can machine a workpiece 1,250 mm in diameter and 850 mm while occupying only 3 m x 4.2 m of shop floor space. The machine has an in-house-manufactured tilt/rotary table that offers high precision and high-speed indexing. Mitsui Seiki developed the Vertex 100 in response to manufacturers' demands for a compact machine capable of high-precision milling of large blisks for aircraft engines.

The company demonstrated the third version of the Mitsui Seiki Vertex 75X 3-4 axis VMC. The Vertex 75X III has increased bed casting rigidity that enables achievement of surface finishes in 3-D micro-line segment CAM programs. The machine also features additional displacement sensors and compensation algorithms that improve thermal compensation capabilities.

Mitsui Seiki also presented, in a special seminar at MTF 2018, Takeshi Morioka of the Honda Motor Company R&D department who described the struggles and successes involved in Honda's design and development of the Honda HA-420 light business jet. Morioka detailed the challenges of machining aerospace components and shared the ways the company overcame obstacles and achieved success.

Also at MTF 2018, Mitsui Seiki President Tetsuji Okuda noted that the company has many customers in the aerospace industry while it also emphasizes development of machinery for the mold and prototype industries. He added that Mitsui Seiki is increasing production capacity to help reduce long lead times for machine tools and parts. The goal of this 90th anniversary year for the company, he said, is to increase productivity by 50% while maximizing product quality and minimizing lead time.
