Aleris Expands Its Facility in North America

Aleris has recently expanded its facility in Lewisport, KY. The $400 million expansion makes it the newest and largest Aleris facility in North America and allows for the production of up to 480 lbs. of aluminum auto body sheets annually. The expansion positions Aleris to meet growth in North American automotive demand as the industry pursues broader aluminum use for the production of lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles and added more than 150 jobs in Lewisport and 17 at the company's innovation center in Detroit.

Aleris has served the automotive industry from its facility in Duffel, Belgium for many years. Including Lewisport, the company has nine rolled aluminum products facilities in North America, the majority of which serve building and construction, truck-trailer and metal distribution customers.

Aluminum trends in the automotive industry include lightweighting. A few facts about lightweighting from a recent study by Ducker Worldwide include:

  • The total aluminum content is expected to grow to 565 lbs. per vehicle (PPV) by 2028, representing 16% of total vehicle weight.
  • This is consistent with the emerging trend of automakers transitioning to a multi-material vehicle (MMV) design approach, choosing aluminum for doors, hoods and trunk lids, body-in-white, bumpers and crash boxes.
  • Aluminum sheet for closures is expected to grow to 61 PPV in 2020, or over 2.5 times in five years, which is more growth for closures than expected.
