VMC Provides Value

"The SMTCL VMC850B is a high-quality machine that provides power, speed and accuracy," said Chad Turner, National Sales Manager for SMTCL.

According to Anthony Zamora, Service Supervisor for SMTCL, "The quality of the machine is exceptional because we use high quality components from all around the world."

The SMTCL VMC850B features the Japanese FANUC 0i Control that features 7-year mean time between failures (MTBF). SMTCL uses the complete FANUC package including drives, motors, resolvers and other key components.

"In addition to the control components, SMTCL uses a Taiwanese GIFU 24-position side tool changer and a Taiwanese Spintech 10,000 RPM spindle featuring a high-quality rotary union for providing coolant through the spindle," said a company spokesperson. "In addition, SMTCL uses Japanese THK linear ways featuring way lube pumped directly to the high quality bearings. Quality is also enhanced by Taiwanese Hi-Win ball screws, a U.S. Bijur lubricating system and Grundfos pumps which is headquartered in Denmark, but manufactured throughout the world."

Zamora added, "Also, the German design of our castings make the VMC850B weigh over 15,000 lbs., but that also results in a firm, rigid structure for the machine.

Turner said, "SMTCL's power for the VMC850B comes from the rigid design, standard coolant through the spindle and the FANUC drives and motors. Our customers find that the VMC850B is a deceptively powerful machine. I have seen customers machining aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, Inconel and titanium on our 40 taper VMCs. Cutting it is one thing, but SMTCL's machines provide a beautiful finish on most materials. If a customer is performing lots of titanium cutting, we have our line of 50-taper VMCs with a German ZF 2-speed gearbox. The 50-taper machines will further reduce cycle times and improve finishes on titanium." The SMTCL machines come with a standard 10,000 RPM spindle.

Ryan Friedlinghaus, a SMTCL customer and host of West Coast Customs TV Show, said, "By using the other standard SMTCL features, we find that we can reduce cycle times by increasing speeds and feeds. The machine has a maximum rapid feedrate of 1,250 IPM and a cutting feedrate of 787 IPM. By using the coolant through the spindle, we find that we can increase speeds and still maintain a good finish. Also, by taking a deeper roughing pass, we can reduce total cycle time."

Customer Randy Birchmeier at RDM Machine in Michigan, stated, "The spindle chiller on the machine does a tremendous job of reducing heat and keeping our parts accurate. Heat growth is always a problem when we are machining large jobs throughout the day. In Michigan, it can get very cold in the morning and then it heats up a lot in the afternoon. For the precision parts that we are making for our aerospace and medical customers, we need accuracy and repeatability. I like to say that the FANUC control gives us the accuracy but the SMTCL design provides us the repeatability that we need."

Turner also stated that SMTCL's machines provide the options that today's manufacturers need. "Our VMC850B comes standard with the 10,000 RPM chilled spindle, 24-position tool changer, coolant through the spindle, a chip conveyer, oil skimmer, air gun and coolant gun," he said.
