Robotic Inspection with Integrated 3-D Vision

A new robot-integrated inspection automation solution by ABB Robotics, Inc. is designed to digitize and simplify quality control while improving cycle times.

"The system consists of a 3-D white-light scanning sensor mounted to the arm of an ABB robot. It utilizes digital scans to detect defects on manufactured parts with a high level of accuracy, raising the inspection and quality assurance technology available to manufacturers to a new level," said a company spokesperson. The agility of the robot provides the precise movements necessary for the sensors to access most areas of both simple and complex parts from the optimum angle.

"Robotic 3-D inspection represents the future of flexible manufacturing, enabling a high level of automation with advanced data analysis that can be used to optimize production processes," said the spokesperson. The turn-key inspection and quality control system is suitable for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), aerospace companies and customers in other sectors such as metals and plastics.

The system's sensor technology rapidly records and compares highly detailed geometric and surface data with digital CAD models, enabling the automated inspection of manufactured parts and pieces, helping factories to reduce cycle times while raising quality and reducing the risk of quality control errors.
