Lucifer Furnaces Supports STEM Education

Lucifer Furnaces has built a dozen furnaces this past year for educational facilities across the country in support of the STEM education. "Most high schools and technical programs look to the Lucifer's Red Devil (RD) economy models, which are built for safe, simple and dependable operation with energy efficient performance," said a company spokesperson.

On dual chamber models, an upper hardening chamber, reaching 2,200 °F, is stacked above a tempering oven which heats to 1,200 °F. Both chambers are insulated with 4-1/2" of lightweight firebrick and mineral wool backup. Firebrick is precision dry fit with staggered seams for reduced heat loss while allowing for thermal expansion resulting in lower maintenance costs. Long lasting low watt density heating elements in easy-to-replace sidewall panels provide uniform heating.

RD models come standard with insulated horizontal swing doors, with cam locks for a tight seal and safety micro switches to shut off power when doors are opened. Ceramic hearth plates support a workload up to 25 lb./sq. ft. of hearth and serve to protect the floor brick. A high volume CFM recirculating fan is mounted in the rear of the tempering oven for horizontal airflow providing uniform heat for stress relief and other applications. Single chamber RD furnaces and ovens are also available and can be built as a bench or floor model.

RD furnace and oven chambers are individually controlled with Honeywell digital time proportioning controllers mounted in a NEMA 1 panel on the side of the furnace away from the hot loading area. A general purpose hardening furnace along with a tempering oven are essentials of introduction to metallurgy coursework.

RD models come in four standard sizes for quick delivery. Lucifer Furnaces custom designs each furnace with modifications from controls being mounted above the heating chamber to taller floor stands, a variety of door options as well as recorders, overtemperature systems and more.
