Range of Advanced EDM and Machining Technologies

GF Machining Solutions will debut its AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 X advanced wire EDM, full 5-axis additions within its Mikron MILL S and X product line and advanced automation systems at IMTS 2016. Additionally, GF Machining Solutions will showcase its latest developments in additive manufacturing (AM) and System 3R automated laser texturing, along with several other recent advancements in 5-axis milling and both die sinking and wire EDM machine technologies for industries such as aerospace, medical and die/mold.

The CUT 2000 X helps eliminate pitch and positioning errors that could otherwise result in scrapped parts and increased production costs. The machine's positioning capabilities allow it to hold tight part tolerances for enhanced quality and surface finish.

The CUT 2000 X can achieve ± 1.5 µm pitch accuracy over 340 mm x 240 mm and the same for M-shape form accuracy. Stringent factory assembly standards and specific calibration tests help ensure the machine's performance for precision workpieces.

The new Mikron MILL X 600 U that will be unveiled at IMTS is designed for the production of parts with concave and convex part surfaces, especially under high feedrate conditions. "Mikron MILL machines generate enhanced surface finishes and cut parts to exacting tolerances," said a company spokesperson.

GF Machining Solutions will demonstrate the new Mikron MILL machine within a FANUC automated multi-machine manufacturing cell that will show a full lights-out operation scenario. The cell will also house a Mikron HEM 500U milling machine and a coordinate measuring machine (CMM).

Other GF Machining Solutions technology advancements coming to IMTS:

  • Additive manufacturing: The AgieCharmilles AM S 290 Tooling machine incorporates additive processes based on the technology of the EOS M 290 metal laser sintering system.
  • Automated laser texturing: The compact 5-axis AgieCharmilles LASER P 400U machine provides laser engraving texturing and structuring for small parts.
  • MILL P 800 U ST: The Mikron MILL P 800 U ST (Simultaneous Turning) combines milling and turning in a single machine. The combination helps improve productivity, accuracy and cost effectiveness and eliminates transfer-related part errors, making it especially valuable for aerospace applications.
  • MILL S 400U: The Mikron HSM 400U milling machine provides full 5-axis simultaneous high-speed machining in a compact footprint that can accommodate workpieces up to 9.05" x 13.77". This machine will highlight a post processing application for additive-built conformal mold inserts.
  • HEM 500U: Through its special rotary/tilt table and 20,000 RPM StepTec spindle, the Mikron HEM 500U delivers parts production through efficient, 5-axis-simultaneous single-set-up machining.
  • Liechti GoMill 350: The Liechti GoMill 350 is part of range of 5-axis milling machines engineered for machining turbines for aircraft engines and power generation.
  • CUT E350: The CUT E350 wire EDM incorporates several technologies to help manufacturers increase flexibility, accelerate time to market and reduce cutting times by up to 18%.
  • CUT 200 Dedicated: The CUT 200 Dedicated wire EDM for the aerospace market delivers speed, performance, quality and productivity - in addition to the ability to control production costs.
  • FORM 20: The FORM 20 die sinking EDM helps conserve energy through its Intelligent Power Generator that optimizes the EDM process and reduces electrode wear. The FORM 20 will be shown with a System 3R WorkPartner 1+ robot.
  • FORM 200: The FORM 200 die sinking EDM equipped with the Intelligent Speed Power Generator can reduce electrode wear and provides quality surface finishes, increased material removal and high accuracy, even in applications involving deep, narrow cavities and poor flushing conditions. This machine is designed for applications using difficult aerospace alloys.
