Fischer Technology Offers Picodentor HM500 Microhardness Measuring System

Fischer Technology has announced the capabilities of the Picodentor HM500 Microhardness Measuring System for hard material coatings. The instrument utilizes the load/indentation depth method according to DIN EN ISO 14577-1. With this high-precision method, the indenter, typically a Vickers or Berkovich pyramid, is continuously pressed into the material tested with an increasing test load and then unloaded. The respective indentation depth is measured at the same time. Taking into account the geometric relationship between the indentation depth and the shape of the indenter, this measurement produces the physically meaningful Martens Hardness. Some material characteristics that can be computed according to ISO 14577-1 are Martens Hardness, HM, indentation hardness HIT (convertible to HV) and modulus of indentation EIT. In general, the intended use is for micro-hardness measurements according to the DIN specification above for uses such as lacquer coatings, electroplated coatings, hard coatings, such as TiN on cutting tools. In addition, many other applications for the HM500 have been developed around the world, including ultra-thin DLC coatings. The hardness measurement range is specified from 0.001-120,000 N/mm2.

The design of the system incorporates a programmable X/Y-stage, motorized Z-axis, autofocus, joystick for controlling the X/Y stage and Z-axis, and a measurement system is mounted onto an active anti-vibration table. Options include video monitoring and even an atomic force microscope (AFM) capability. In addition to hard material coatings, the Picodentor HM500 is suitable for measuring the hardness of ultra thin DLC coatings, protective coatings on glass, coatings of PC hard disks and CDs, very thin paint coatings, soil-resistant coatings (sol-gel coatings), nano-coating for sensors, single crystal metal as well as ceramic material.
